Specification defines next generation USB protocol architecture and doubling bandwidth to extend USB Type-C™ performance
Beaverton, OR, USA – March 4, 2019 – The USB Promoter Group today announced the pending release of the USB4 specification, a major update to deliver the next generation USB architecture that compliments and builds on the existing USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 architectures. The USB4 architecture is based on the Thunderbolt™ protocol specification recently contributed by Intel Corporation. It doublesthe bandwidth of USB and enables multiple simultaneous data and display protocols.
The new USB4 architecture defines a method to share a single high-speed link with multiple end devicetypes dynamically that best serves the transfer of data by type and application. As the USB Type-C™ connector has evolved into the role as the external display port of many host products, the USB4 specification provides the host the ability to optimally scale allocations for display data flow. Even as the USB4 specification introduces a new underlying protocol, compatibility with existing USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices is supported; the resulting connection scales to the best mutual capability of the devices being connected.

Key characteristics of the USB4 solution include:
- Two-lane operation using existing USB Type-C cables and up to 40 Gbps operation over 40 Gbpscertified cables
- Multiple data and display protocols to efficiently share the total available bandwidth over the bus
- Backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3
With over 50 companies actively participating in the final stages of review of the draft specification, the USB4 specification is on track to be published around the middle of 2019. Coincident with the release of the USB4 specification, the release of an updated USB Type-C Specification will be made to comprehend USB4 bus discovery, configuration and performance requirements.
USB Developer Days 2019, in the second half of this year, will include detailed technical training covering the USB4 specification and the latest for USB Type-C, USB Power Delivery, and other exciting topics. This update is part of the USB performance roadmap and is specifically targeted to developers at this time. Branding and marketing guidelines will be established after the final specification is published.

Intel today announced that it will open the Lightning Protocol Specification to USB promotion organizations, and manufacturers can build chips and equipment compatible with lightning standards free of charge. According to data released by Intel, Lightning 3 has been fully supported in Windows 10, MacOS and Linux systems, and the number of PCs using this interface continues to double every year.
Intel said that the Open Lightning Protocol specification is a significant milestone, which will open the simplest and most functional ports for all to use, and the upcoming 10-nm Ice Lake processor will also support Lightning 3 natively, thus bringing win-win situation for Industry and consumers.
At the same time, USB Promotion Organization announced the upcoming USB 4 standard based on Lightning protocol for the first time, to achieve the integration of the underlying lightning and USB protocols, and enhance the compatibility between products based on USB Type-C interface. In fact, the existing USB Type-C has been integrated with Lightning 3 to some extent, and with Intel’s full opening of Lightning technology authorization, the two will be integrated from the bottom of the protocol and benefit each other. That is to say, USB 4 can double the transmission speed of Lightning 3 again with the help of Lightning 3, which is 40 Gbps comparable to Lightning 3, as well as the power supply capacity up to 100W. It can also be connected with graphics cards, two 4K displays or a single 5K display. In addition, unlike in the era of USB 3.0/3.1/3.2, the use of color interfaces for intergenerational differentiation does not require USB 4.
Since USB 3.2 includes the USB 4 being developed, the traditional A and B interfaces have been completely abandoned, and Type-C will become the only existence, because the new super-high speed uses the dual-channel transmission of this new interface. Of course, another advantage of this new interface is that it can be plugged and unplugged at will without distinguishing the positive from the negative.
